Since 2000, Spina have been at the forefront of interior accessories and detailing for the home. Created by the multifaceted, award-winning designers Joe Zito and Robbie Spina, whose combined backgrounds in design, fashion and art perfectly mesh, the company offers a range of decorative pieces and accents showcasing their trademark tassels and fringing. The house style is both endlessly singular and instantly recognizable, from curtains and room dividers to lighting, cushions and footstools. Spina makes exclusively hand-made bespoke pieces by selecting the finest materials and combining them ingeniously to create what are truly modern classics.
The approach is refreshingly innovative, with a choice mix of hard and soft textures, and contrasts and combinations. The designs showcase unusual and rare semi-precious materials such as coral, pearls, and tiger-eye alongside fine Japanese silks or Alcantara. Making the old new again, Spina has turned to the time-honored craft of tie-backs, which was originally developed in medieval times and was all the rage at the courts of the 18th century, in France and other European countries. Yet the two designers behind Spina have taken this craft and have brought it up to date for our own times, along with elevating it to the status of an art form.
Because these decorative fittings are shifting, movable and silky, they have a certain relationship to the clothing fashions that are an important part of the designers' background. In these pieces, the fashion influence can be felt, which gives their accessories a sensuous feel that softens the home. Tassels can decorate furniture pieces, curtains or door handles. Shifting strands of a room separator or sultry ribbons of light create moods of intimacy or luxury.
Working with top-of-the-line companies, such as Wedgwood, Mulberry and Van Cleef & Arpels, and being commissioned by the world's leading interior designers and architects, not to mention clients such as Madonna, Christian Dior and Paris's Hôtel de Crillon, along with garnering global press and critical acclaim has cemented their place at the top ranks of today's home outfitters.
Spina will be launching a new collection at Salone del Mobile Milan featuring pendants, wall and floor lighting, ottomans, tiebacks, tassels, tie-bands, cushions, gliding paneled walls as well as launching an exciting new design 'The Kelly Light'.
