The Robert Four Manufactory, the most important in Aubusson, is one of the last heiresses of Aubusson Manufactories raised to the rank of Royal Manufactory by Colbert in 1664.
Since 1952, the manufactory perpetuates a five century know-how passed on by generations of master-weavers. Our weavers still do same gestures as before, giving birth to sumptuous tapestries, as well as wonderful carpets.
The creation, whether it is for tapestries or carpets, always starts by the elaboration of the cartoon, and wool selection. Then, wools are dyed in the limpid and pure river Creuse, which made the reputation of the dyers in Aubusson. Those one dye wool in a traditional way, mixing the three primary colors and judging the right color only with their eyes.
Then, tapestries are woven traditionally on horizontal ?low-warp? looms, thanks to the meticulous and conscientious work of weavers. In order to beneficiate from the status of original work of art recognized by the states, tapestries are created in limited numbered editions of eight copies, with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist, or a legal claimant.
Our carpets are created with the same care. Whether they are weaved on horizontal ?low-wrap? loom (flat weave carpets) or on a vertical ?high-warp? loom (Savonnerie carpets (or ?hand knotted lockstitches?), and tufted carpets (or hand sewn tufting), our carpets are all custom-created.
